Malcolm-Jamal Warner is an American actor, director, producer, and musician. He is best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. Warner has also appeared in numerous films and television shows, and has directed and produced several projects as well. In addition to his acting career, Warner is an accomplished musician, having released several albums.
Early Life
Malcolm-Jamal Warner was born on August 18, 1970 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His mother, Pamela, was an art director and his father, Mark, a marketing executive. Warner attended High School of Performing Arts in New York, where he developed an interest in acting. He made his television debut at the age of 8 in the NBC miniseries The Women of Brewster Place.
Career
In 1984, Warner was cast as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, which ran for eight seasons. He was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the show, and won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Young TV Performer. After the show ended, Warner starred in the CBS sitcom Malcolm & Eddie, and appeared in films such as Major Payne, Love and Basketball, and Brown Sugar. He also starred in the television show Listen Up and directed and produced several projects, including the documentary series Iyanla: Fix My Life.
Personal Life
In 1998, Warner married actress Michelle Thomas, who portrayed his girlfriend on The Cosby Show. The couple had a daughter, Michelle, in 2000. Thomas died in 1998 after a battle with cancer. Warner is currently in a relationship with actress Regina King. He is an advocate for the environment and has been involved in several charities, including the Special Olympics and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
